5 Ways I Enjoy Great trekking experience with a
great guide
Everest
Base Camp Trek is a famous challenging trek in Khumbu, Nepal. Famous
for its spectacular mountain peaks and the loyalty and friendliness of its
inhabitants (the Sherpas), the Everest region (Khumbu) is one of the most
popular destinations for tourists in Nepal. While many of the routes through
the mountains are arduous, there are ample places to rest and enjoy a meal
along the way. Probably
the most enjoyable AND the most memorable holiday I have ever been on, reaching Everest base camp
after an early morning start and a 6 hr. hike. Walking alone in the mountains
when my group was either 1hr ahead of me or 1 hr behind me. It was awesome.
Hearing children singing songs one night outside our teahouse. All this was
crazy wonderful. It was
the most memorable and exciting part of my holiday.
Here are some tips to help
you have the most unforgettable experience with your Everest Base Camp Trek
1.
Get Fit. Definitely should get very fit before going. Also it
is camping, just with four walls around you, so very cold at times and washing
was almost impossible in places so be prepared. And if you are not fit, you may lose all the
enjoyable fun there. You must have full strength and vigor as well as freedom from signs
of disease, your appearance and behavior must be soundness and balance. Do be
fit to get the best out of this trip.
2.
Be
Prepared. You need a decent size daypack. Although it says in the literature
that you need a daypack for just your camera and a bit of water... You also
need to have room for layers of clothing. You must park all the necessary
things you need for the trekking. Take t-shirts for trekking in - it gets
scorches as you work so hard walking! If you like your sweet treats, stock up
from home or be prepared to pay the price for imported, out-of-date chocolate
;-) Enjoy, Enjoy, Enjoy! So hard, mentally and physically, but worth every
single step. Would do it again in a heartbeat.
3.
Make
sure you train well before going. Get yourself pretty fit by
running stairs, walking and trekking hills, cycling and definitely core
strength. The fitter you are the easier it is.
4.
Go
with extra cash. Things
get more expensive the higher the altitude, so extra rupees are a good idea. Expect to leave tip along
the way. Some people may need to consider this extra expense before going. A rough guide is tipped the porters 2US dollars a day per
person per porter and 4 US dollars per person per assistant guide per day.
These people ensure your trip is a memorable, successful one, so if they do a
good job, don't be stingy!
5.
Bring
a hot water bottle for the evenings there is no heating. You must hire or bring a good
sleeping bag with you, bring your own silk sleeping bag liner, take an umbrella
(sounds stupid until it's monsoon rains and your soaked and catch a cold) and
test out your waterproof pants and jacket before going (ours did not withstand
heavy rainfall and we got soaked through!)
Conclusion
Climbing the Everest is the
dream of many – including me. With these tips, you’re better poised to make
your Everest Base Camp Treka memorable and enjoyable one. So make it happen,
and make it great.
